Much more common place is the problem that people don’t claim their accomplishments on their resumes.

They’re afraid to. They feel as though their ex-boss is peering over their shoulder as they type. They don’t want to claim accomplishments that fell outside their formal job description.

They’re hesitant to claim triumphs that they actually made happen  behind their boss’s back, because their boss didn’t want them working on something or other. Virtually every cop movie in history uses the same motif — a disillusioned cop goes outside the system and behind his supervisor’s back (or hers) to solve the mystery and get the bad guys. We all know the story. Many of us have done the same thing on the job, even though we aren’t cops.

Once you’ve left the company where your hands were tied by your boss, or once you’ve decided to leave if you’re launching a stealth job search, you claim that triumph!

It’s yours. Who cares who approved it? You did it!
If you can tell the story, put it on the resume, like this:

When our marketing analysis software release was three months late to launch and customers were angry, I built a short-term fix and got it into 25 of our biggest customers. I saved those clients from going to our competitors, and all of them increased their sales volume with us that year.

Sometimes it’s appropriate to color inside the lines, and sometimes you have to color outside them. Now that you’ve left that job or getting ready to leave, your boss has nothing to say about what goes on your resume. As you write your resume, forget about your tasks and duties. Anybody in the job would have done that stuff. We want to know what you brought to the assignment, and how you left your mark!

If you imagine your boss or ex-boss reading your new resume and falling over in a dead faint, good for him or her! We all need our frame shaken at times. It’s your career. It’s your history. If you did it, claim it! No one knows your story better than you do. Claim your power and tell the world what you contributed at your past jobs. Your version of events is now the official version. Congratulations!
